Megaware KeelGuard®
Yes, however, we do not recommend using a Megaware KeelGuard® for beaching on a boat longer than 30ft. The boat’s weight may tear or damage the KeelGuard. Call our office at (801) 334-5335 to place a custom length order and for further product and warranty information.
The Megaware KeelGuard® must not touch, sit, rest, or be compressed against any surface of a boat trailer, lift, or floating dock. This includes the trailer’s bunks, cross braces, rollers, v-blocks, or bow stops. Contact with these surfaces create pressure points on the KeelGuard, weakening and tearing the 3M adhesive. Additionally, the edge of the KeelGuard can easily snag and tear on these surfaces when loading or launching.
Yes, you can apply the Megaware KeelGuard® over slightly raised hull strakes or chines. After completing the installation, apply a marine-grade adhesive sealant to these raised areas between the hull and the KeelGuard to seal any small gaps where water could potentially get under the adhesive.
The Megaware KeelGuard® must be installed directly to the boats surface. We do not recommend installing it over a wrap, as the weight of the KeelGuard could pull the wrap off the boat.
It’s important to have a solid surface before starting the installation process. The adhesive bond is only as good as the surface it is applied to. Damage to your boat’s keel, unprofessional repairs, or any paint or gelcoat not properly bonded to the boat’s original surface can cause the Megaware KeelGuard® to fail. We recommend having any damaged areas repaired before installing the KeelGuard.
Anti-fouling or boat bottom paint must be removed before installing the Megaware KeelGuard®. However, you can apply boat bottom or anti-fouling paint over the KeelGuard once it is installed directly onto the boat’s surface.
To keep your fiberglass protected, we always suggest installing the Megaware KeelGuard® over gelcoat. This helps maintain its structural integrity. If it’s just a tiny area, you might be fine, but for the best results and to ensure it’s watertight, a gelcoat repair is recommended.
Temperature and humidity can affect the adhesive bond and your Megaware KeelGuard® installation. 3M recommends the ideal application temperature range, for both ambient and surface, is between 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C) and 25% to 75% relative humidity.
If possible, bring your boat into a climate-controlled shop or garage and allow the surface of the hull to reach the acceptable temperature. It’s also important that the KeelGuard and the hull are at the same temperature during application. Simply place the KeelGuard in the same area as the boat while it reaches the correct temperature.
Yes, it is crucial! To ensure proper adhesion, you must prepare the boat’s hull by etching (roughing up) the gelcoat surface using the included Scotch-Brite pad. Many issues we see are from improper surface preparation! Etching removes dirt, wax, and factory mold release agents. It also enhances adhesion by allowing the Megaware KeelGuard’s adhesive to grip the surface more effectively.
If you’re using sandpaper, stick to 180 grit or finer. The surface should be dull after etching, not shiny. The 3M adhesive won’t stick properly if the surface is shiny.
The recommended length is the shortest KeelGuard you should install on your boat. The Megaware KeelGuard® is designed to extend beyond the lowest point of the boat to prevent snagging and tearing when beaching, loading, or launching your boat. For assistance selecting the correct size, please see our size chart or contact our office at (801) 334-5335 for assistance.
The boat must be completely dry in order for the adhesive to bond to the hull.
Start the Megaware KeelGuard® application 4-6 inches above the resting water line. The resting waterline is the line where the hull of the boat meets the surface of the water when the boat is sitting still. To ensure accuracy, make sure your boat is properly loaded with passengers, fuel, and equipment.
Yes, when you bring your boat up to plane, the water pressure against the leading edge of the Megaware KeelGuard® can tear the 3M adhesive foam core and peel the KeelGuard off the hull if it’s installed too low. To prevent this, start the KeelGuard application 4-6 inches above the resting water line. We do not recommend installing the KeelGuard below the water line.
Please call our office at (801) 334-5335 for assistance.
To choose the right size Megaware KeelGuard®, check your boat’s length on our size chart. For a custom length, we can create a tailored order! To measure for a custom KeelGuard:
- Start 4-6 inches above the boat’s resting waterline.
- Measure along the keel to its deepest point (the lowest part).
- Extend the measurement 2-3 feet beyond this point for full coverage.
Contact us at (801) 334-5335 for help with sizing or custom orders.
We strongly advise against cutting the Megaware KeelGuard® shorter than the recommended length for your boat. Doing so may cause snagging or tearing during launching and goes against our lifetime warranty terms.

You will need isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or acetone, plus paper towels or a clean cloth, to thoroughly clean the hull after etching. Check out our installation video or contact us at (801) 334-5335 if you have questions about the installation process.
The Megaware KeelGuard® should be kept rolled up and in it’s original packaging. Store it indoors, out of direct sunlight, and in a controlled climate environment between 60° to 80°F and 40° to 70% relative humidity.
Please call our office at (801) 334-5335 for assistance.
Yes, you can remove the Megaware KeelGuard®. The foam core of the 3M adhesive is designed to split in the middle if the KeelGuard is pulled free from the hull. To remove the remaining adhesive from the hull, you can use a plastic or nylon putty knife or a rubber pinstripe/decal remover wheel and an electric drill. These wheels can be purchased at most automotive stores and online (make sure to purchase one with the drill adapter).
Any remaining surface residue can be removed with rubbing alcohol or acetone.

If it’s clear the SkegGuard is not suitable for your skeg, or you want to verify compatibility, please contact our customer support team at (801) 334-5335 so that we can assist you.
The Megaware SkegGuard® itself is unlikely to cause cavitation when properly installed, as its smooth, corrosion-resistant stainless steel design improves water flow over a damaged skeg. However, its stainless steel composition requires adequate anode protection to prevent galvanic corrosion on adjacent aluminum parts, which could indirectly affect cavitation if left unchecked.
Ensure Proper Anode Protection:
- Install Correct Anodes: Use anodes suited for your boating environment (zinc for saltwater, aluminum for brackish water, magnesium for freshwater). Most outboard/sterndrive motors (e.g., Mercury, Yamaha) have factory-installed anodes on the lower unit or cavitation plate, but verify they’re appropriate for your setup. Saltwater vs. Freshwater: The risk of galvanic corrosion (and thus cavitation-related surface issues) is higher in saltwater due to its conductivity. Freshwater boaters face less risk, but magnesium anodes are still needed for aluminum motors.
- Check Anode Condition: Inspect anodes regularly (every 3-6 months in saltwater) and replace them when 50-70% eroded. Worn anodes lose effectiveness, increasing corrosion risk on the skeg or lower unit, which can lead to cavitation-prone surfaces.
- Clean Anodes: Remove marine growth or corrosion byproducts from anodes and nearby surfaces, as buildup can alter flow and contribute to cavitation.
- Add Anodes if Needed: If installing a Megaware SkegGuard®, confirm that existing anodes adequately protect the motor. In high-corrosion environments (e.g., saltwater marinas), consider additional anodes on the transom or shaft, following motor manufacturer guidelines.
Minimize Galvanic Corrosion:
- Rinse After Saltwater Use: Rinse the skeg, SkegGuard, and lower unit with fresh water after saltwater exposure to remove electrolytes that fuel galvanic corrosion. This prevents pitting or roughness that could disrupt flow and cause cavitation.
- Inspect for Corrosion: Regularly check the skeg, SkegGuard, and lower unit for signs of pitting or galvanic corrosion, especially in saltwater. Address any damage promptly to maintain smooth surfaces.
Combine anode maintenance with other anti-cavitation measures, such as maintaining a proper propeller, adjusting motor trim and height, operating within recommended RPMs, and ensuring unobstructed water flow, for general cavitation prevention.
The Megaware SkegGuard® is designed as a protective cover accessory that attaches to your motor’s skeg using bolts. It does not alter the motor’s performance or internal systems. However, as warranty policies vary by manufacturer, we recommend contacting your motor’s manufacturer or reviewing your warranty terms before installation.
